I was a hip hop fan, and i still am, not so much like before but sometimes i listen to what are the hits of today in this genre, aswell as some old school rap, Snoop dog stills one of my favourites, E-40, Too Short, 50 Cent, also are on my tops and others not so popular but with good sound production, Luniz, Outkast, Wu-Tang-Clan, The Pharcyde, Black Moon, Lost Boyz (some real old school stuff)... Simultaneously i was listening to rock music, the ones that i can recall now are Metallica (of course) Skid Row, Def Leppard, Megadeath, Poison, Motley Crew, Bon Jovi, just to name some.
Then i moved to techno and trance, i wont get into details with that. But in 1997 a friend introduced me to the music that has been stuck to me till now, woow, that is a day to remember, He asked me: Have you heard of Goa trance? Then he put a cd playing some of the pioneers, like Shiva Shidapu, Astral Projection, Etnica, MFG . The sound was just fenomenal, nothing compared with i was listening in those days. So i got hooked at the moment and started to buy lots of goa trance cds and also started to attend openair goa parties. In my city (Cancun, MX) there weren't so many, actually, they were almost unknown. It was really an underground scene.
I also started to dj in 1998, bought my cd players and mixer, and with friends, started to organize some small parties, with mainly friends attending and other people with really good vibes. Only good memories i have from those days. There were a few serious psytrance party organizers, and the most memorable events were in a place called Tres Rios, and later the Sonpax parties which became a tradition, the New Year ones were the most crowded and popular, with people comming from all over Mexico and abroad to enjoy the best of psy and progressive trance music at the best locations that only the Riviera Maya could offer with its white sandy beaches and unique sunrise, the views were just outstanding!.
But recently things have change, the first promoters are not there anymore (in the Cancun area), and the new ones haven’t had the same luck due to different reasons (that i will skip writing about). So what its left, is go to the bigger cities, like Guadalajara or Mexico city, which held the bigger parties in the country, but bigger doesn’t mean better, unfortunately. A lot of international and well known artist have been complaining about the organizers and promotors in Mexico, i guess that would be another topic that i would like to put in a separate post, so until then, keep on trancing!
